The start is pretty similar to Hozier's 'Take Me To Church' albeit at a much slower pace and with much less pop. The verse sets the stage for the chorus oh so perfectly. He sings about water getting colder and he probably means that life is getting much less vibrant since his 'lover left'. BRUISES.
